If you have received an allegation of academic misconduct, please contact us and we can help you with the next steps. We can explain what to expect, how you can respond to the allegation, and we can attend the hearing with you.  
The University takes academic integrity very seriously. Academic integrity requires that all of your assessments are your own work and are properly sourced.  Plagiarism is when you use someone else’s ideas, research, or written work without saying where it came from and/or saying it is your own (even when you paraphrase it). Referencing your work is so important. Yes, it takes a really long time, but it will save you a lot of grief.  
You must reference and acknowledge any work from any source that is not your own, in any assessment you do. Plagiarism includes copying from your friends, reusing past assessments, getting help from a third party (and not referencing it), and using commercial information you found on the Internet. If you are ever unsure, lecturers and tutors are generally happy to check your work for correct referencing. The Library is also full of resources and helpful staff that can assist you. When in doubt, just reference it.   
Plagiarism is taken very seriously, and the University sees it as a very serious form of misconduct. If you are accused of plagiarism, then you can find yourself facing a Student Discipline Hearing. Again, the key is referencing properly. The Library is always there to help and do not be afraid to ask your tutors to double check that you have done it right. You can also book an appointment with Student Learning where someone can help you by checking your assessments or teaching you how to reference. Behavioural Misconduct
If you have received an allegation of misconduct, please contact us and we can help you with the next steps. We can explain what to expect, how you can respond to the allegation, and we can attend the hearing with you.
Students and staff at the University are expected to uphold a standard of conduct. The University does not tolerate physically aggressive behavior, any forms of violence, intimation, coercion, bullying, discrimination, harassment, or threatening behavior.
Behavioural Misconduct encompasses many things, essentially it is any misconduct that is not academic. If you have any questions about this, please contact us and we can help.
Appeals Process
We can help you to appeal a decision from the Student Discipline Committee if you believe you meet one (or more) of the grounds to appeal. These include:

That the process used for addressing the alleged misconduct was unfair
That the decision reached was manifestly at odds with the evidence
That the remedy imposed was manifestly at odds with the misconduct
That significant new evidence has become available that could not reasonably have been obtained and presented during the initial process and that could have a material effect on the outcome.

It is very important to remember that you only have 14 days from the date of the outcome letter to make an appeal.

A Better Funded WSU

A BETTER FUNDED WSU

Currently your Students’ Union is around 85-90% funded by a Service Level Agreement. Effectively the University meet with the WSU and they decide what the priorities for students are and how much of your Student Services Levy should go toward funding each thing. Then it gives us a contract to deliver some of those things, like  O’Week, clubs, advocacy, and Nexus. The much larger pool of money it uses for itself on projects that benefit students like careers services, Lady Goodfellow Church and UniRec.
Since Covid we have been proud to keep that fee the lowest among the big five Universities (and AUT)
But the reality is as a result you guys have probably missed out. Missed out on Bigger O’Weeks, a better modernized student bar, a better funded clubs system, maybe even a bus. The reality is though we can’t and won’t change the fee that much without realigning the transparency.
SO INSTEAD WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING IS&#8230;
&#8211; Moving the fee closer to the other Universities
&#8211; Releasing a video each year showing the new initiatives your levy funded and how the money was split
&#8211; Reporting at each of the three student meetings or forums on what Student Service Money is spent on
&#8211; Creating a yearly “STATE OF OUR UNION” survey where we find out about your issues, what you want from campus, and where we can help most

CONSULTATION

CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM
If you are a fan of the WSU you know that no one wants to have another SGM less than we do. The idea of 250 students in a room with pizza and drinks talking about more changes is not our idea of fun. 
BUT.. 
Recent changes to the Incorporated Societies Act mean we need to change the way we do some things and instead of doing them each year we thought we would ask you what you want and do EVERYTHING at once. Then have a celebratory half trimester party afterwards. 
CHANGES TO THE INCORPORATED SOCIETIES ACT 
The boring part is that SOON we are going to be LEGALLY REQUIRED TO present our financial accounts no later than six months after the end of the financial year. So instead of just moving our State of The Union AGM to June we thought we would look at the whole system, accountabilities and governance. What we came up with was too sections. The  stuff we broadly agree on that we think are common sense changes that benefit everyone, though you can tell us if we are wrong. And  the bigger question of how you want to be represented moving forward? 
So the next few weeks every time the WSU talks to you whether it is through prize loaded surveys, talking points or meetings we will be talking about this but it is important to remember…WE DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING YET IF WE DON’T WANT.  That can be future WSU’s problem but the clock is running.

Of all the changes we want to make this one is the easiest and the most logical because it costs you money. Every time there are disputes, or complaints, issues with the board or HR it has cost you unbudgeted money. When the board are setting Honoraria or budgets they can effectively just ignore the advice of professionals and staff. So last year the board held an SGM (AGAIN) to approve an Advisory Group.
In 2024 we want to transfer ore powers to that group and set it up in a meaningful way but not something that stops the students from making decisions
The Advisory Board would be made up of the Director of Student Services, the WSU Solicitor, and an independent WSU Trustee.
AND THEY WOULD:

Over the past decade the WSU has become great at giving things away. Pancakes are always a solid option, sausages of both the meat and non meat variety,  BurgerFuel free fries were always great, and then there was that one memorable summer with a supplier of Noodles.
However, without question the thing that helps the most is money. And we have gotten really good at helping when it is needed, we help for student hardship, we help when a club needs new uniforms, and NOW WE CAN HELP INDIVIDUALS!
The problem before was if you weren&#8217;t in need of help we had no mechanism for it. Now we have the STUDENT SPONSORSHIP FUND.
Before anyone gets too excited it has some pretty strict criteria that can be found next to the application form on this page, it also has conditions like a $1,000 dollar contestable maximum which means that like a scholarship there is no guarantee you will get awarded anything. 
While there are more criteria (seriously, read the policy. It&#8217;s only 3 pages), here are the main ones for eligibility.
Grants will only be awarded to students who
5.3.1. Are currently enrolled at the University of Waikato; and
5.3.2. Have been selected to attend an event; or
5.3.3. Have been selected to represent their region or New Zealand at an event or
5.4.4. Can demonstrate their attendance at an event or activity that will benefit the Student Body and/or wider university community. 
So if you are a high-achieving type- a person who has a conference or is about to go to represent the region- then talk to us. 
THE FIRST ROUND OF FUNDING WILL CLOSE ON THE 17TH OF MAY 2024.

Community Garden Growing

COMMUNITY GARDEN GROWING
The Free Food Club is always looking for ways to equip our fellow friends (students) with new skills, friendly faces and free food! If you like to learn new skills, have dirty hands, or love free food, we welcome you to our Community Garden plan. FFC and friends, thanks to the funding and efforts from the WSU team, have initiated a new &#8216;Community Garden&#8217;. This is an opportunity for you to hone your gardening skills (or gain some), meet some like-minded people, play a small part in fighting climate change, or just enjoy some of the free food that will be provided on the day!
Our friends at the WSU have shouted at us some staunch garden beds, which you will find next to the Cow Shed (out the back of the WSU), sourced by who we like to call the &#8220;Master Gardener&#8221; of Waikato University &#8211; Mark Thompson.
The community garden shall grow food that students can feel free to harvest as they need it and later this year, the FFC plans on hosting a &#8216;Soup Kitchen&#8217; event, making soup out of the vegetables that we grow (provided our gardening skills are sufficient enough), and then turning each soup into a bit of a pot-luck for the cooks to enjoy.
Massive thanks go out to the team behind the scenes for making all of this possible, the &#8216;Master Gardener&#8217;, the WSU team, and to the other clubs involved, such as Te Tini o Hakuturi and other Te Kaahuinga Tumuaki ( T.K.T.) affiliates for providing their expertise and support!

Student Sponsorship Funding Proposal

PURPOSE

1.1. Some students are involved in pursuits at a high level of achievement and/or community engagement, and are not otherwise eligible for support or funding from the WSU.  This could be as an individual or as a small group.  These activities may provide students with the  opportunity to develop leadership, organisational, critical thinking, communication, or other important life skills, or could lead to post-study career avenues.
1.2.  The WSU may provide funding to sponsor or support these students, or otherwise assist in their activities.
 
1.2.  This policy outlines the process and procedures required for the approval by the WSU for funding requests.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES

3.1.  Applications must be made on the required forms and may not be processed without all
        the relevant information.
3.2.  A funding application should include:
3.2.1.  A detailed proposal that outlines the reason/event and/or opportunity the 
           applicant wishes to uptake.
3.2.2.  The person&#8217;s involvement in the University community and how this will impact  
            themselves as a student of Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato.
3.2.3.  A budget breakdown and any other alternative avenues of funding the individual
           has sought, pursued, considered or obtained.
3.2.4.  Supporting documents deemed appropriate.
3.3. Grant applications must be future focused and not retrospective.
 
3.4. When evaluating a funding proposal, the WSU Board and/or its delegates will assess the
        proposal based on criteria such as the project’s alignment with WSU’s mission, anticipated 
        impact on the student community, and fiscal responsibility.
3.5.  The WSU Board and/or its delegates may conduct due diligence, including interviews with
        applicants and verifying budget details.

APPLICATION TIMEFRAME

4.1. A minimum of three (3) funding rounds will be allocated each year by the WSU.  These will
       be roughly evenly spaced and held during academic term time in both A and B Trimesters. 
4.2. Other than in exceptional circumstances, all funding applications must meet the published
        submission deadlines, and must be submitted at least fourteen (14) days before the 
        proposed event or project.
                4.3. WSU may approve funding requests with conditions or restrictions, which must be met by  
                        the requesting organisation.

CRITERIA FOR APPLICATIONS

5.1. Individual applicants must provide a letter of selection for the event or activity that they are attending when submitting an application for a grant. 
5.2. Individuals can only receive one grant per calendar year. 
5.3.  Grants will only be awarded to students who: 
5.3.1. Are currently enrolled at the University of Waikato; and
5.3.2. Have been selected to attend an event; or
5.3.3. Have been selected to represent their region or New Zealand at an event; or
5.4.4. Can demonstrate their attendance at an event or activity will benefit the Student Body  and/or wider university community. 
5.4. Other than in exceptional circumstances, individual grants cannot cover: 
5.4.1. Food or alcohol; 
5.4.2. Volunteers’ holidays, international volunteer work trips, or university exchanges.
5.4.3. Political or commercial merchandise for registered political parties. This includes but is not limited to: event hire costs, political poster/flyer printing, and administration costs; 
5.4.4. University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ) Events; and
5.4.5. Any retrospective projects, events, or activities. 
                5.5. Other than in exceptional circumstances, grants will not exceed a maximum of $1,000
              per application.

DISBURSEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY

6.1. Approved funds shall be disbursed as per the terms and conditions outlined in section 4 of this  funding  policy.
6.2. Those whom are successful must sign a contract that stipulates:
6.2.1. The amount awarded.
6.2.2. An acknowledgement that the successful applicant will provide a report outlining the impact and outcomes of the use of their grant.  This must also include photo and/or video documentation if possible.
6.3. WSU reserves the right to audit the use of funds to ensure compliance with the approved
        budget.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

7.1. WSU Board members and staff are not eligible to apply for this grant.

RECORDKEEPING

8.1. All funding requests, approvals, and related correspondence shall be documented, filed, and maintained by WSU for audit and reference purposes.

REVIEW AND AMENDMENTS

9.1. A review for this policy shall take place every 3 years and be updated, if needed, to reflect the changing circumstances and requirements of the WSU and the student body.

COMPLIANCE WITH LAW AND REGULATIONS

10.1. WSU shall ensure that all funding approval processes comply with applicable laws and regulations.

WSU Appoints Director Pacific

The WSU is delighted to announce the appointment of Rosalie Norton as WSU Director Pacific.
“We believe Rosalie is an exceptional person and will be a fantastic addition to the WSU Board. She is creative, talented and has a strong drive to serve her community and Pacific People,” said WSU President  George Liu.
“I am excited by the challenge of working with the board and particularly the VP Māori to re-energise the Rōpū Pacific area that has struggled since Covid. I am hoping to get started right away because there is a unique life and energy to campus when the Pacific Clubs are thriving,” said Rosalie Norton
“With Rosalie’s appointment now official, our next step forward is providing new infrastructure for Pacific rōpū, so that groups like Tech-Tongans, Vanuatu and the Cook Island Students Association get more support and a seat at the table” said Vice-President Māori Temepara Smith
Aside from her new role with the WSU, Rosalie has long since been an advocate for the Waikato creative community. She hosts the podcast “Generation Unapologetically Me” is a co-chair for the Rangatahi Voices, Waikato Regional Council youth council, youth advisory member for both Inspiring Stories and The Hive, and founder of mindbox.nz, which runs youth workshops on mental health. Rosalie also performs as a musician under the name Lehali (who also has a new single and music video coming out soon!).
Rosalie’s appointment at the WSU Board Meeting (29th of April) in Tauranga concludes a process of independently shortlisting candidates with a non-WSU panel and then interviewing a top three.
We would like to thank Sianiti Nakabea, Fuifui Te&#8217;evale, and Whetu Taukamo as well as all of the excellent candidates. We know this process has taken slightly longer than we would have hoped, but we are confident that we have found someone who can help us re-engage a vital community on campus.

Nikita Van Dijk joined the meeting by video call.  She advised the meeting that she was the President of the Waikato Disabled Students Association and was keen to establish a stronger relationship between the two organisations.  Initially she hoped this would take the form of support for events and sharing ideas and communications.  George reassured Nikki that her participation and insights were valued, and that WSU would support her organisation in any way that they could.

The meeting agreed to allow Shane to speak to the meeting at this time instead of Business Item 2 as previously planned.
Shane briefed the meeting on recent negotiations for staff collective contracts.  Significant gains had been made for Sessional Assistants.  Around 900 of these positions are now included in the Academic Collective Agreement for the first time so have access to things like sick leave.  Ongoing negotiations for other positions seem to be heading towards staff cuts and/or industrial action.
Shane asked the Board to reflect on how those actions might impact on students in terms of access and quality of education moving forward.

HR review – A meeting has been held with Catherine Stapleton regarding conducting an independent review of the managers performance and remuneration for 2022 and 2023. Terms of reference are now being drawn up so that a process and scope of engagement can be agreed to.
Budget 2024 – the manager advised the Board that the budget that was passed at the 2023 AGM had some anomalies and would need to be reviewed. Due to workload, he had not been able to provide the information to this meeting so would present it to the next meeting.
Financial Report for 2023 – This had been placed into the meeting drive for Directors to see, and a fuller briefing would need to take place at a later date. The meeting was briefed that the organisation ran at a deficit for 2023.
Acquittal report for 2023 – A copy of this report was placed in the drive for Directors to see, any questions please refer to the manager.

Last week, we reopened Puutikitiki at The Pā, our Māori student space here on our Waikato campus. It was awesome to see our tauira and rōpū Māori attend to tautoko this kaupapa. These taonga will bring new life into our space and could not be given to anyone more deserving.
These works include our two pou, with two separate designs on each pou, and the sign out the front of Puutikitiki. Massive mihi to Hamiora for designing these for us; you have created a long-lasting effect on an important space for our tauira.

JAMCLUB is a University Club that was started for the idea of students wanting to play and jam
music with others while outside of Music Degree or Papers. (Music students are still welcome!!).
The amount of talent lost due to being unable to pursue music as a career seems substantial.
Like myself, I still want to gig and play music as a hobby but have been unable to pick up music
papers. But music is not something that I can live without.
We want our JAMCLUB to represent a space and a time where we can rest from the struggles
of school life, even if for an hour or less at a time, through the power of music and
collaboration.
To be able to play or just listen to music in the moment, with others who share a common
interest.
This club will focus on being able to jam over anything;
&#8211; Want a break from study? Come Jam with us!
&#8211; Feel like you want to sing and play? Come Jam with us!
&#8211; Do you feel like you just want to listen to some tunes? Come Jam with us!
So even if it’s for just a minute. Sit with us, hear the music, be the moments, and rest.
There&#8217;s a long way yet to go, don’t be afraid to take some time to live again.

The Students Union Building (SUB) received a brand new mural thanks to the phenomenally talented @Haser_NZ and the people at Boon (faceook.com/boonartshamilton) Boon, in conjunction with the WSU and the University of Waikato have been working to bring more colour and life to campus. We will do a full breakdown on what the mural means and an interview with the artist in a later issue of &#8216;Kato but for now we just wanted to thank everyone involved.
