ABOUT GRANTS

Every year the WSU spends approximately $60,000 on clubs and club grants. The reason we love doing it is because clubs, societies and rōpū Māori exemplify the best aspects of what it means to be a student. The people responsible for running these clubs are, without exception, people who devote their time and energy to serving the campus and creating campus culture.

There are two types of accessible grants for students. There are the Administration Grants that you get simply for completing your affiliation and the much more interesting type like the Contestable Grants. The Administration Grants come in three categories:

  • Clubs with up to 30 members receive a $50 payment
  • Clubs with between 31-100 members receive $100
  • Clubs with over 100 members receive $150

The Contestable Grants are significantly more interesting because they reward socialisation, innovation and imagination.

Clubs can be awarded up to $1000 in a calendar year provided that the grant will help to enhance the student experience on or off campus or serve the specific needs of a community.

To find out more about our club grants you can email clubs@wsu.org.nz and talk to one of our team.

THINGS WE’VE THROWN MONEY AT

In the last year we have contributed toward a lot of student initiatives. Moving forward there will be testimonials and galleries here so you can see first hand but for now we wanted to mention a few.

We helped fund the 3rd Annual Chinese Cuisine Festival.

We paid for a pull-up banner to help people identify Engineers Without Borders and the fantastic work they do.

We helped put on two quiz nights for Te Ranga Ngaku and a pub crawl for CS3.

The Media Students Club put on their first film festival and we were happy to be attached.

We celebrated both Pakistani and Indian independence days.

We helped launch SANfest with the Study Abroad Network and ensured both the Waikato International Students’ Association and WULSA could have Cinderella moments at their own Balls.

We gave the Young Investors Club some seed money when the stock market and economy still existed.

We also gave a lot of funds to helping clubs host or attend conferences all around the country.

We did all of that and so much more without holding a single fundraiser sausage sizzle at Bunnings. And sausage sizzles are one of our few marketable skills.

We can’t wait to do even more in 2021.
