The Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) is deeply concerned about the recent events and violence occurring around the world. As a union that is committed to serving students, as well as promoting the values of peace, understanding, diversity, inclusivity and justice, we believe that it is imperative to address the ongoing genocide in Palestine and stand in solidarity with our students and communities affected by the violence happening in Congo, Sudan, West Papua, and the Ukraine.

We call on the Aotearoa New Zealand government to urge all parties involved in the genocide in Palestine to commit to an immediate ceasefire. We also call on the Aotearoa New Zealand government to expel the Israeli ambassador until a ceasefire is implemented and the ongoing war crimes committed by Israel towards Palestinian civilians stops. We want both parties creating space for dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful negotiations in order to achieve a just and lasting resolution. We support the right to self-determination for Palestinians on their whenua, along with the fundamental principles of human rights and international law.

Moreover, we encourage our student community to engage in respectful and constructive conversations that promote understanding and empathy. We strongly uphold the values of diversity and peaceful coexistence of all peoples, regardless of cultural, religious, or political backgrounds.

To support the local Free Palestine actions in Kirikiriroa, there is a weekly Free Palestine rally every Saturday at 1pm at the end of Wairere Drive and Naylor Street. There is also a weekly vigil and march every Wednesday at 6pm at Garden Place. There is also an open letter on behalf of the students, staff, and alumni of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Universities calling on all the Vice-Chancellors to release a joint statement on behalf of our Universities standing in solidarity with Palestine (link)

To our students affected, please know that we are here for you. Please reach out to us or make use of the support services available at the University should you need them. These can be found below:
